Akot secondary (high) school

Akot secondary (high) school has the initial plans of accomodating 300 students on a campus  near the village of Akot near Rumbek, South Sudan. It is currently being considered as a school exclusively for girls because historically there has been so little attention given on providing educational opportunities for girls.  The board of directors and advisors are presently in collaboration on this matter.

The school will be supplied primarily by  the students from Maleng-Agok elementery school,  with the proposed subjects of Mathematics, English as Second Language, Geography, History, Social Studies and eventually Geometry and Physics and other science related classes.  It is hoped that the school will also provide vocational training and opportunity for learning skills that are important to building home and community, ie. home economics.  The school will hopefully have a small working farm that will allow students to assist in the production and preparation of their own meals.  We will integrate learning with doing in the belief that learning is greatly enhanced by practice joined with theory.  We hope to provide an excellent library for the students and allow it to be accessible to the the community.

Currently we have a five year plan for development and establishment of the school.  Increasingly we hope that the school will become supported by the local community and the state as the government forms and becomes more stable. And ofcourse we would not be dissappointed to complete our planned work in a shorter amount of time.

The structure that we envision will have adequate offices for teachers and administrators and will have a working cafeteria that will eventually provide work opportunities for the local citizens.
In the initial construction we hope to secure a clean and adequate supply of water, provide 12 class rooms, an administrative office and modest gymnasium and or playing field. A room with modest accomodations for a school principal/headmaster will also be part of the first phase of construction.

To learn more about our ongoing progress please look for pictures and updates on our web site and contact us to learn how you can support and be involved with our efforts. A visual model of the construction site and buildings will be forthcoming.  We are considering making possible work teams who could travel to Sudan and assist in the construction and development of the school.  Please let us know of your interest and we encourage and welcome any questions you may have.
